Toronto Jobs # Senior Actuarial Analyst / Actuary at Canadian Premier - 03/2022

Who we are

At Canadian Premier, everything we do is driven by our genuine desire to build connections with our customers – listening, reflecting, responding – and being there for them during the most trying times of their lives. To be the best at what we do, we look for compassionate, creative people who work efficiently, aren't afraid to make decisions, and are driven to understand how their role fits into our vision; to be the innovative insurer trusted by families to provide financial protection through partners who care.

For more than 60 years, Canadian Premier has been committed to providing financial security to Canadians and their families in the face of uncertainties, insuring over two million customers coast-to-coast. Every day at Canadian Premier means a day spent helping Canadians and their families build secure tomorrows.

Headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, with an office in Burnaby, British Columbia, we are a wholly owned and independently operated subsidiary of Securian Financial, a Fortune 500 company*.

Who we need

Due to acquisitions and natural expansion, Canadian Premier's Life and General companies are looking to expand their corporate functions and have a need for Senior Actuarial Analyst's or new FCIA's in various departments.  These roles could involve serving the CPL and CPG Corporate Actuarial function, including asset liability management and capital reporting, serving the pricing department for all product lines, or working in the Actuarial Transformation area on several initiatives including IFRS 17 and setting up valuation modeling for new business lines. The candidates should have significant SOA or CAS exam progression or FSA/FCAS designation, and relevant experience preferably with an understanding of the financial dynamics of affinity insurance products, specialty P&C products, and/or group and individual life products. These positions will report to AVP or Director level Actuaries and will collaborate closely with the Chief Officers of the Companies to ensure proper financial management, rate setting, and asset liability management. The Actuarial Student Program at Canadian Premier supports students in exam progression through study time, fee and material support, and other incentives, as well as through the encouragement of developing key actuarial and managerial skills. The role may be in Toronto ON, Waterloo ON, or Burnaby BC.

What's in it for you

Immediate and ongoing professional development. You will participate in the Actuarial Student Program at Canadian Premier, which supports students in exam progression through study time, fee and material support, and other incentives. Joining us now is a chance to establish your role here, build out your skills, and grow with us as we continue to scale.

Hands-on exposure. You will have opportunities to develop critical actuarial and managerial skills encompassing all facets of a full Actuary role before completing your exams. In addition, as part of a smaller organization, you will have increased exposure and mentorship to our industry and services, as well as the chance to apply your learning to practical business situations and recommend methodologies.

Flexibility. As a company that promotes a work-life balance, you will work remotely for part of the week and operate on a flexible schedule.

What you will do

  • Analyze. You will prepare an actuarial analysis for internal stakeholders, including the executive leadership team. You will effectively gather, manipulate, and validate large amounts of information using sophisticated models and statistical techniques to creatively solve actuarial business problems and form the basis of decision-making. You will provide critical input and insight, including claim analysis, review of trends, and review of appropriate diagnostics to support underwriting/claims/actuarial discussions.
  • Measure. You will develop and maintain reports to measure profitability across a wide variety of life, health, and specialty Property and Casualty products. You will produce, analyze, and interpret data using spreadsheets, databases, and actuarial software.
  • Support. You will aid the Appointed Actuary with mortality, morbidity, and persistency studies for life, disability, accident, hospital indemnity, and critical illness products. You will provide technical support and expertise to non-actuarial personnel.
  • Collaborate. You will build and strengthen close connections with finance and non-finance business partners to provide a broad financial business view, support initiatives, and share skills and information.

What you bring

  • The education and experience. You have a university degree in a quantitative field, you have a FSA/FCAS designation or have made significant progress in the Society of Actuaries or Casualty Actuarial Society exams. You understand the financial dynamics of affinity insurance products, i.e., specialty P&C products or group and individual life products. You have expertise in research, data gathering, analysis, reporting, and recommending solutions based on your work.
  • The interpersonal skills. You have outstanding written, presentation, and verbal communication skills, including presenting complex, technical information to high-level non-technical stakeholders. You can build relationships within and across teams.
  • The technical skills. You are highly proficient with MS Office, Excel, and Access in particular. Ideally, you have hands-on exposure to Tableau, Python, VBA, and GGY Axis.
  • The accountability. You are a self-starter who proactively takes the initiative to solve problems. You have a growth mindset, are adaptable to change, and can create processes with minimal guidance.
